Stress and Overweight

POSITIVE THINKING:

I have caught myself all too many times thinking negative thoughts. "This line up will take forever" or "I will never get out of here on time". You know those words you use in your head that you think no one else will hear. They happen so often that you don't even notice anymore. Well someone IS listening. It is your subconscious mind and it is quite happy to give you whatever you think whether it's good or bad. It is a message taker and has no sense of humor. It takes you literally.  So, if you are thinking, "I will never lose weight" or "This will never work" or whatever negative thought you have toward your goal, you are sabbotaging your progress.  Even though you think no one is listening.  That is where the yo yo diet comes from.  You are on a roll and you are focusing on your positive progress.  Then something happens or doesn't happen to you to start thinking the negative version of your progress.  Up, down up, down........ And on we go. So, if you want to have better experiences in your life. Think and talk in a positive way.  Correct yourself if you catch yourself saying negative things and announce, "This is what I DON'T want, now what do I really WANT."  That will help you pivot out of that dark place and fill the void with something positive.

MEDITATION:

We have all heard that our lives are too stressed out and we need to take some time for ourselves.  Many, many articles have been written about stress and over weight.  There are loads of chemicals that are secreted in our body when we become stressed.  Mostly they were used as the "Fight or Flight" mechanism to save our life.  Now a days we just live a more stressful life every day.  Thes glands are now over worked and are dumping endless amounts of chemical into our system that keep the fat from leaving.  "THE SURVIVAL MECHANISM".  So, it's time to relax.

Learning to meditate can help you relax and have a calmness about you that you can only experience to believe.

There are many many types and ways to meditate. Have you been caught daydreaming in class, in a meeting or even while behind the wheel of your car? You are already well on your way. You are disengaging your conscious mind and zoning. That is the same place that you go when you meditate. When you pay attention to your thoughts you can then focus on what you want instead of what you don't want. I know people who meditate for 15 minutes a day up to at least an hour every day. Just focus on your breathing, in and out and let your mind go blank. If thoughts come, that's ok just say it can think about you later and let it pass out of your mind. Many people stare at a candle or an object to keep their focus. Others listen to music or recorded meditations. There are endless options out there to help you quiet your mind. "Ommm " or "Huuu" are good sound to make to lift your energy while you meditate as well.

Your Physical Health and Exercise

EXERCISE -vs- CANCER: Did you know that new studies have come out indicating that CANCER can not live in an oxygenated body? That's right just having more oxygen in your bloodstream could help you to never get cancer. In fact scientists had discovered this fact and a Nobel Prize was issue for the information. Dr. Otto Warburg discovered the root cause of cancer in 1923 and won the Nobel Prize in 1931 for the discovery. Here are a couple of his comments. "All normal cells have an absolute requirement for oxygen, but cancer cells can live without oxygen - a rule without exception" "Deprive a cell 35% of its oxygen for 48 hours and it may become cancerous." Exercise is one of the best ways I know to get that extra oxygen. Besides, as we age we lose approximately 8% of our lean muscle mass every year. Yikes..... Yes and over time you will end up looking like those little old ladies that could blow over with a little gust of wind. Exercise can help you rebuild some of that lost muscle. I hear the groans right now. How to do that is to include cardio vascular exercise (good for strengthening your heart muscle as well as your circulation and strengthen your bones). Doing strength building exercises like lifting small weights will help increase your naturally shrinking muscles. Stretching is the third component that is critical to staying healthy. As we age our muscles and tendons get shorter and dry out. Doing yoga or even stretching exercises will help you to stay limber and strong. All muscle can only shorten 2/3rds of its total length. So the longer your muscle is, the stronger your muscle is. This is very important for those 40 and over. Like massage, meditation and sex, exercise activates the parasympathetic system to help you relax and provides the body with much needed oxygen and "feel good" chemicals that reduce stress. It will also make you stretch the rib cage muscles to allow you to breathe much deeper than you usually do. That deep breathing relaxes your muscles and organs to bring much needed oxygen into your cells. Even walking can increase your oxygen intake and relax you. There are so many ways to get physical. Always pick one or more ways that interest you. It can be walking, sports, yoga, or exercise machines and dumb bells. Start at home with a video tape if need be. Our lives have become more sedentary with the invention of technology and now we must move our body on purpose. If you haven't been active for a while it is best to start out gently and slowly build up to longer times and heavier weights. As always having a physical before you start any new regime is always wise.

The Weather and Food

The Weather Affects our Food Choices.... People who live in a warmer climate will find that the idea of eating stew, spaghetti or other comfort foods in the middle of June seems apalling. However, those of us who live in the northern half of the US especially in the Pacific NorthWest find those things very appealing right about now. It's 56*, cloudy with impending rain. However in Phoenix, salads and light food would the order of the day. For those of us who live in a climate with cooler temps and less sun, pay attention to your heavy diet and get outside more. I find that weight gain is easier with a high carb diet and less exercise. What I try to do is schedule a time, I know I can get outside and at least walk. Usually in the morning, the earlier the better. That sets up my day to be healthier. I tend to feel better in general and thus eat a little smarter. Use the feel good hormones from the exercise to brighten your day instead of the feel good chemicals in the chocolate you want to eat. Whether you live in the South, North, East or West always remember to use exercise to feel good and not the high fat or high carbs to do it.
